Early intervention

The Early Intervention initiative is a response to the need for more early intervention services for children with a physical disability (aged 0-8 years).
Early intervention is important to support the development of infants and young children with a disability and promote their full potential.
Early intervention and support are highly effective ways to prevent or reduce the need for more intrusive interventions at later stages.
The department is pursuing a multidisciplinary approach to supporting children with a physical disability, their families and carers through:
- education and information services for families
- exercise programs
- social skills programs
- therapy services and programs
- support to access local play groups and other education and care services.

In 2006-07 the Early Intervention initiative allocated $3 million in funding to the following service providers:
- Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland
- MontroseAccess
- Sunshine Coast Children's Therapy Centre.
The Early Intervention Initiative Manual is available here for funded non-government service providers and Disability Services staff. The manual provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for the delivery of services through this initiative.
