Support for older carers initiative
Additional support provided to families can strengthen their ability to care for their family member and enables the family unit to stay together longer. In the instance of older carers it is recognised, that the capacity of families to continue caring can diminish over time as a result of failing health, reduced energy and exhaustion.
To acknowledge the long-standing contribution of older carers to those they care for and to the community, additional respite services have been established over the last three years to specifically cater for older carers and their family members. Besides providing respite, these services have offered families the opportunity to plan for the future.
More recently additional funding has become available to assist older carers and their family members to take the next step towards transitioning to alternative support arrangements.
