Adult and Community Support Services
Adult and Community Support Services is one of the ways Disability Services Queensland provides support to people with a disability as well as their families and carers.
What are Adult and Community Support Services?
Adult and Community Support Services are a range of professional and specialist services that are planned to meet the needs of you and your family or carers. These services aim to:
- provide information about disability, and link you with available services
- help you to live a good life and participate in your community
- help your carers to provide quality support.
While the nature of services may vary slightly from location to location, Adult and Community Support Services can include:
- support with planning and decision-making for your current and future needs
- assessment, counselling and direct support in areas such as behaviour support, communication, mobility, daily living activities, community inclusion and skill development
- assessment and assistance with applying for specialised equipment eg wheelchairs, communication devices
- education and training for you and your carers eg in understanding and responding to behavioural issues or developing and using alternative means of communication
- assessment and assistance to access respite and accommodation support services provided by Disability Services Queensland.
Who is eligible to receive assistance through Adult and Community Support Services?
To be eligible for assistance from Adult and Community Support Services you will need to meet the criteria outlined in the Disability Services Queensland Eligibility Policy.
You must be one of the following:
- an Australian citizen
- a permanent Australian resident
- a Temporary Protection Visa holder
- a New Zealand citizen who arrived in Australia prior to 26 February 2001
- a member of a family on a work or study visa sponsored by the Australian Government.
You must also live in Queensland and have a disability that:
- is attributable to an intellectual, psychiatric, cognitive, neurological, sensory or physical impairment or a combination of impairments
- results in a substantial reduction of your capacity in one or more of the following areas: communication, social interaction, learning, mobility or self care/management
- results in you needing support and
- is permanent or is likely to be permanent (an may or may not be of chronic episodic nature) and
- manifests itself before the age of 65.
To be eligible for Adult and Community Support Services you will also:
- have an intellectual disability and high support needs; and
- be a child aged 6-17 years receiving respite provided by Disability Services Queensland; or
- be over 18 years of age; or
- be living in a Disability Services Queensland accommodation support service.
How do I apply for support?
Contact your nearest Disability Services Queensland Service Centre, by phone or in person.
A Disability Services Queensland officer will collect information about your circumstances and the services and supports you are seeking. This information will help decide if you meet the access criteria for Adult and Community Support Services.
If you are not eligible for Adult and Community Support Services, the officer will try to link you with other services provided by Disability Services Queensland or link you to other support options and services within the community. The officer can also help you to complete a Disability Services Queensland Application for Support form if needed and if appropriate.
