Law supporting carers

Recognition of carers

The Carers (Recognition) Act 2008 (PDF 521 kB) recognises the valuable contribution carers make to the people for whom they care and also the social and economic benefit carers provide to the community.

Queensland Carers Charter

The Act includes the Queensland Carers Charter (Word 137 kB) which aims to help carers be heard by government and their issues better understood in the community. Public authorities are obligated under the Act to consider the Queensland Carers Charter when making decisions that affect carers, especially in relations to services. The charter makes special mention of young carers and carers in regional and remote Queensland, due to the exceptional circumstances they face.

Carers Advisory Council

The Act provides for a Carers Advisory Council to be established to advance the interests of carers.
