General comments

Participants were asked if they had any other general comments to make on the draft Carer Recognition Policy. Seventy-nine individuals and 15 organisations responded with general comments. Although many participants raised issues that have been discussed elsewhere in this report, some new issues did emerge.

One of these was a problem carers reported experiencing with professionals and service providers interpretations of privacy legislation so that many feel they are not given vital information about the care recipients' medical condition or treatment strategy.

The need to plan ahead specifically for the ageing population and the increased numbers of ageing carers, was mentioned by some participants. The themes of wanting more action in terms of implementing the policy and providing adequate funding were raised again. Many carers expressed the belief that if they were given better support and services, they would be able to continue the caring role for longer, whilst having some time for their own quality of life.
