In 2005 I had the world at my feet. Then, just before my 25th birthday, I 'died' twice. A brain haemorrhage and countless operations later, I’m learning to walk again. Nine fingertips, all my toes and one leg were amputated. But surgeons can't take my enthusiasm for life. That's why now, even with challenging disabilities, I have the world at my feet again.

I used to measure success by university results, sporting, travel and work achievements. But none of these challenges and accomplishments were as important to me as overcoming my first challenge to hold a pen and write my name. Disability brings a new perspective to life. If my greatest challenge was a work deadline, I'd be happy.

Last year I was asked to speak at a dinner about overcoming challenges and why, after everything that's happened, I still felt like the luckiest girl in the world. However, I never made it inside the venue. I had a seizure and was diagnosed with epilepsy. Weeks later, I returned and gave the speech. Nothing had changed and after facing yet another challenge, I still felt like the luckiest girl in the world.

"Disability brings a new perspective to life."

I'm grateful for the ongoing support from family and friends. My disability brings daily challenges but also wonderful opportunities. If life throws you lemons, make lemonade!
