Grant Plowman
Grant Plowman I have cerebral palsy. My parents were told I would never amount to anything and to put me into an institution. They ignored the doctor's advice and I thank God they did. Through love and encouragement, I took my first steps at 7 years of age.
I always loved cars and dreamed of one day driving a race car. At 17, I got my licence and one year later I started dirt track racing in a Mini-manual with no modifications. My left hand is strongly affected but in 1981 I won the South-East Queensland junior dirt track touring car championship. I was the only driver who had a disability. I did rallying and sprint kart racing too.
In 1996, I had three cervical vertebrae crushed. I had spinal fusion surgery and wore a halo for four months. The operation was successful, and I got into my home gym and made a good recovery.
I dreamed of taking up cycling but never had balance for two wheels. I now ride a recumbent trike 25 kilometres, three days a week. I love it! I get a sense of freedom and it keeps me fit and motivated. My greatest dream came true when I married my beautiful wife Marites seven years ago.
I have shared my life story with schools, churches and even a bikie club. Never stop dreaming. Have a go!
