Barb RosendaleBarb Rosendale

Hi, my name is Barb Rosendale. I live in Cooktown and I have spina bifida.

I was born on the Sunshine Coast, and lived there until the 1980s when my family relocated north to live near Hopevale on Guugu Yimithiir country. Even though my disability meant I missed out on hunting expeditions, it allowed me to spend more time with my Elders and come to appreciate the spirit of my people. My Grandfather Rosendale encouraged me to get a good education — for the community and for myself.

My teenage years were spent at a boarding school where I experienced some terrible teasing and felt ostracised. I then went to Griffith University and did a Bachelor degree in environmental studies while an active member of the disability collective, advocating for better physical and educational access. I also got involved in environmental politics and did volunteer work for the Wilderness Society and Friends of the Earth.

"I am accepted for who I am and for what I can offer to the community."

After university, I returned to Cooktown. Since I’ve been home, I’ve tutored kids with learning difficulties, worked in travel and been involved with lots of local groups. My partner and I have a small fishing business.

I have never had any problems finding work here. I am accepted for who I am and for what I can offer to the community.
