Storybook - Training and Employment

Sharing stories is one of the most powerful ways we learn and develop our understanding.

As part of our commitment to working together toward a more inclusive Queensland community we have gathered a collection of stories written by everyday Queenslanders involved in the disability sector.

From people with a disability themselves, to families, friends, carers and services providers, our storybook provides an insight to the lives and experiences of real people, in their own words.

  • Janelle Colquhoun

People see my wife as skilled, knowledgeable and hard working. I see my wife as she struggles to get out of bed in the morning and fight through the day.

  • Joyce Hammelswang

Although I'm not deaf, I began learning Signed English and then joined lip-reading classes. In 2004, I became a teacher in speech reading for hearing-impaired people.

  • Scott Driver

I am a fourth-year apprentice boilermaker at Queensland Rail's (QR) Ipswich workshop - I finish my apprenticeship in January 2007. I have been profoundly deaf since birth.

  • Ian Williamson

My name is Ian, I work at the Nundah Community Enterprise Cooperative (NCEC). It was formed for people with a learning disability to have a job and to have some extra money to spend.
