Checklist for Policy and Procedures

1. Does the service have a policy for preventing and responding to abuse, assault and neglect?      
2. Does the service have a set of procedures for responding to abuse, assault and neglect?      
3. Do the procedures reflect the best interests of the person alleged to have been abused? Eg:
- Specify that medical assistance is to be sought immediately;
- Make every attempt to separate the alleged victim and
alleged offender.
     
4. Do the reporting procedures include roles, responsibilities and identification of when and how to report to the police or other relevant bodies?      
5. Does the service provide appropriate support to alleged victims, families and staff around allegations of abuse, assault and neglect?      
6. Is there evidence that management, staff and volunteers have been informed of and trained in the policy and procedures?      
7. Is there a complaints and grievance process which includes:
- Confidentiality - readily available to staff, consumers and
families;
- A resolution process;
- Specified timeframes?
     
8. Does the service have an incident reporting process which
includes:
- Nature of incident;
- Names of people involved;
- Outcomes;
- Response to person making allegation;
- Records which are dated and signed?
     
9. Has the service reported any alleged incidents of abuse, assault and neglect to the local DSQ office?      
10. Is there a register of incidents, kept in a secure place?      
11. If the service manages client monies, is there a record keeping mechanism for individual transactions?      

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

  1. The policy and procedures must take into account gender and cultural issues.
  2. People with challenging behaviour and communication disorders are more vulnerable to abuse, assault and neglect.
  3. All policies and procedures must be available to consumers, staff, volunteers and families.
