Welcome to Connect
In this edition of Connect, we cover some of the ways the disability community in Queensland is embracing and shaping the future.
People
Laffan's Way
Early in his career, while working for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in New South Wales, Sydney lawyer Matt Laffan was asked to present a case before the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court in a courtroom that was not wheelchair-accessible.
It's a small world
It's a small world
'I was coming to a point in my life, where although I have a lot of good friends, I felt I didn’t fit in anywhere, that no one really understood.'
Health
Physical activity - a superpill for better health
While regular physical activity is good for everyone, being fit is especially important for people with a disability.
Community
Beware the consequences of spinal cord injury
The Spinal Injury Association is serious about alerting young people to the facts of life as a spinal injury victim and is urging them to "take care and be aware".
Awareness
Mind your language
Language has a vital role in preventing the depersonalisation and marginalisation of people with a disability.
Conference
Shared Visions
On 22 July, more than 500 people gathered on the Gold Coast to be part of Queensland’s inaugural Shared Visions disability conference.
Employment
Recipe for success
When it comes to overcoming life’s challenges, Mark Forzatti shows that strong will and self-belief are winning attributes.
Initiatives
Boy's best friend
Most people are familiar with the saying that a "dog is man’s best friend". But in the case of 19-year old Luke Sharpe, his dog Jerry is much more than just his best friend.
Practical support for non-government organisations
Community organisations make a vital contribution to the well being of our communities - nearly all Queenslanders use a community service at some stage of their life.
News in brief
- Innisfail health service receives funding boost
- Banks review access
- Can the Commonwealth Ombudsman help you?
- New disability standards for education
Transport
Queensland Rail: on track for the future
Queensland Rail has embarked on a multi-million dollar plan to make its rail network more accessible.
Disability Action Week
Queensland celebrates
It’s not every Sunday that seven and a half thousand Central Queenslanders brave the winter chill to party in Rockhampton’s glorious Botanic Gardens. But on Sunday 17 July more than ten per cent of the local population did just that as Disability Action Week 2005 was launched statewide.
Queensland honours disability champions
Queenslanders submitted a record 104 nominations for the 2005 Disability Action Week Awards. While the number of worthy entries made the judges’ job difficult, eleven winners were chosen and presented with their awards at a luncheon at Brisbane’s Carlton Crest Hotel on Thursday 21 July.
