Welcome to Connect

Linda A. Apelt
Ask almost anyone "what are the most important things in your life?" and the answers will almost certainly include family, relationships and jobs.

The way we feel about our relationships and the purpose we find in our work are integral to our well - being and sense of self-worth. It’s about being a part of something bigger than ourselves - about contributing, participating, being included and belonging.

Sometimes, for people with a disability, forming and maintaining those relationships and establishing that sense of belonging can be a bigger hurdle than any flight of stairs or inaccessible building.

In this issue, Connect gives voice to people with a range of disabilities who share their views on relationships and family. The overwhelming message is that while the challenges may be different for different people, underneath we’re all the same. We have continued our focus on employment issues and look at the real life experiences of two young people making the transition from school to the workforce. We also highlight one community organisation’s creative approach to developing employment opportunities for people with both intellectual and psychiatric disabilities.

Local organisations often have tremendous capacity to bring about real change at the grassroots level - whether it’s mobilising local businesses to get involved in disability issues or providing opportunities for people to share their experiences and receive support.

At a time when we are still finding ways to meet the needs of Queenslanders with a disability, it’s inspiring to witness the creativity and capacity of community organisations. We are now working to support and build on the great work of non- government organisations through the Strengthening Non-Government Organisations Project.

I trust that the stories in Connect provide you with new ideas and inspiration for your own work toward making Queensland a place where all people have the opportunity to contribute, participate and belong.
