Rocky road to romance
Peter and Kate taking their artistic talents to face painting.
The path to true love is rarely easy, but Peter and Kate aren't phased by the challenges they've faced to be together.
Peter is 28 and has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Kate is 23 and has spina bifida. They say that sharing the experience of disability has helped them to be supportive and understanding of each other.
"Peter has been learning to see the world from my point of view," said Kate.
"We use public transport and rely on wheelchair accessible buses." Peter also appreciates the allowances Kate makes for him.
"Kate is reallly supportive and understanding, especially when I forget something or act out of character," he said.
Kate says the challenges associated with their respective disabilities have not been the toughest to overcome.
"Some people are very accepting of our relationship but others don't think it's right for two people with a disability to be together," she said. Kate says her family have been keen to shield her from love's ups and downs.
"I know my family want the best for me, but because I have a disability they feel they have a right to over- protect me from life," she said.
"Mum still wraps me in cotton wool.
I know she loves me, but I still have to live my life, and I love Peter."
Peter said that both he and Kate having a disability didn't make any difference to them.
"We just want a life together," he said.Last updated November 2007
