Champs honoured!
Meet our 2004 Disability Action Week award winners!
The individual winners were:
- Brisbane 's Peter Bauerswho turns 90 in November. Peter has been a volunteer narrator for the Queensland Narrating Service for 27 years.
- Brisbane 's Bill Garsdenwho has quadriplegia. Bill has campaigned for 26 years for better transport options for people with a disability.
- Biloela's Jill Loane, has volunteered enormous hours to help establish a community resource centre in the Banana Shire.
- The Gold Coast's Linda Stevenssustained brain damage in a bicycle accident in 1986 and, as a result, has dedicated herself to educating school children about the use of safety helmets.
- Boonah's Geoffrey Jackwitzbecame a quadriplegic through a diving accident five years ago. An energetic farm manager, he often spends time with people who have recently acquired quadriplegia to show them how it is possible to remain active after a serious injury.

Group winners were:
- Brisbane City Council - Transport Award.The Council has started a subsidised taxi service for Brisbane residents with limited mobility. The average trip costs $2.50.
- Hamilton Island Enterprises - Employment Award .The organisation has developed the New Horizons Program, employing many people with a disability over the past 15 years.
- The Police Service Women's Advisory Group Network (Statewide membership) Queensland Police Service - Government Award.The network fundraised to support a seriously ill policewoman. Their campaign created awareness about the everyday difficulties faced by people with a severe disability.
- Channel 9, A Current Affair - Media Award.Reporter David Margan presented two stories about disability; one on disability parking and the other on former Young Australian of the Year, Perry Cross.
- Composite Solutions - Private Enterprise Award.This small Gold Coast marine fibreglass business has gone to great lengths to employ three apprentices with a disability.
- Banana Shire Community Resource Centre Task Force, Biloela - Community Organisation Award.Led by individual award winner, Jill Loane, the task force raised the $800 000 needed to build a community centre which opened in Biloela in July 2003.
- Tertiary Taste Program, University of Southern Queensland , Toowoomba - Education Award.This program allows high school students with a disability to visit a regional university and TAFE campus, live on site and explore career opportunities over a four-day period.
- Vienna Woods State School P&C, Alexandra Hills - Building an Accessible Environment Award.The committee led the creation of an accessible, early years adventure playground in the pre- school grounds.
