People with a disability and their families from Mount Isa, Burketown, Normanton and Doomadgee met with Disability Services Queensland Local Area Coordinators (LACs) to share experiences and ideas, discuss local issues, develop networks and explore ways to create inclusive communities.
LAC Supervisor for North Western Queensland and the Lower Gulf region Karen Christmas says sharing stories of a personal nature is a courageous act which can achieve positive results.
"Through the exchange of stories, participants expanded their knowledge base and created opportunities to develop new and valuable friendships," she says.

"Sharing stories of such a personal nature takes courage and is a way of breaking barriers in the community so people with a disability become included and valued members of their communities."
The two-day workshop, now in its second year, generated a range of ideas and participants plan to organise more social gatherings and skills workshops in the region, and improve access to job skills training, driving permits and transport services.
Workshop participant, Bronwyn Richters, travelled from Mount Isa to attend the gathering with her family.
Bronwyn, whose son has Down syndrome, said the family had a "really good time" and it was an opportunity for her eldest sons to find out what services will be available for their younger brother in the future.
"The workshop enabled families and people with a disability to share their time, hopes, visions and dreams," Bronwyn says, adding that it was also about inspiring others and personal development and growth.
A group has also formed to host a regional festival to focus on people's abilities. The event, to be held in Mount Isa this year, will include fishing competitions, art and bush craft displays, an Indigenous dance event and sporting competitions.
