Specialist Response Service

Providing support in positive environments

The new Specialist Response Service helps people with an intellectual or cognitive disability who exhibit severely challenging behaviour develop positive behaviours and skills for community living.

The service provides therapeutic intervention and innovative and specialist alternatives in behaviour management practices. In all cases, the service promotes the use of least restrictive alternatives. It also provides specialist support and expert advice on the use of restrictive practices where required.

The Specialist Response Service is Queensland-wide with expert teams in regional areas. Services are provided both in community settings and in purpose-built dwellings.

The dwellings offer a positive environment where individualised support can be provided.

Providing environments that are conducive to positive behaviour change is an important part of this initiative. In line with Mr Carter's recommendations, the government has begun a capital works program to establish purpose-built accommodation.
