Growing Stronger
Growing Stronger is a four-year program of reform (2007-2011) to deliver a better specialist disability service system for Queensland. The new system will be easier to access, fairer for all and more sustainable into the future.
Growing Stronger has already delivered benefits for people with a disability. In December 2007, the program introduced the single Application for Support, a new streamlined process making it easier to apply for specialist disability services.
A fairer and more transparent approach to assessing and prioritising the needs of Queenslanders with a disability is now in an advanced stage of development.
In October 2008 Disability Services appointed an independent consortium of expert practitioners and researchers to work with the Growing Stronger program to develop a new assessment and prioritisation framework. Over a six-month period consortium representatives developed the methodology, tools and processes that make up the new framework, using input from stakeholders and drawing on examples of best practice from Australia and internationally.
In June 2009 a three-month trial of the framework and other key parts of the new disability service system began in South West Queensland. More than 350 people with a disability, their families and carers will participate in these trials. The outcomes will be used to refine and further develop aspects of the new system before it is implemented in 2010.
