Queenslanders attend information sessions about the Act

Heidi Kitson, Assistant Director, DSQ Policy Directorate, speaks at an information session in Rockhampton in June

Disability Services Queensland conducted a series of public information sessions on the Disability Services Act 2006 in 17 locations across Queensland from May to July 2006.

The sessions provided an overview of the Act and its implementation and clarified for stakeholders how the Act works in conjunction with existing systems.

The sessions began on 22 May in Ipswich and concluded on 11 July in Logan. Nearly 800 members of the public attended 31 separate sessions—an average of 26 people per session.

An additional session specifically informing the public about criminal history screening requirements under the Act was also conducted in each location.

For those people who are interested in the Disability Services Act 2006 but were unable to attend an information session, Disability Services Queensland will be releasing a DVD in early 2007 which will provide a broad overview of the Act. The DVD will be distributed to all funded non-government service providers, and will also be available for members of the public by ordering through the Disability Information Service.

A guide to the Act and a guide to criminal history screening are also being produced. Keep visiting the Disability Services Queensland website over the coming months for more details on these products.
