About See beyond the disability booklet

Three adults and a young baby are on a rug in the backyard. The adults are watching the baby play with toys.

Disability touches the lives of many Queenslanders in some way - whether it be directly or through experiences with friends, family, colleagues and members of the community.

Negative attitudes and stereotypes can sometimes be more disabling than impairments themselves and can prevent some people with a disability from fully participating in work and community life. Overcoming the barrier of misconception and prejudice is something we can all aspire to.

This booklet is aimed at helping Queenslanders to see beyond the disability and to change their attitudes and behaviours in a way that will contribute to a more inclusive community. Queenslanders with a disability share their personal experiences, and offer practical advice to show how even the smallest change can make the biggest difference to a person's life.

By respecting individual needs, learning more about disability, and appreciating personal experiences, we can all see beyond the disability and help to create a stronger, more supportive and welcoming Queensland community.
