Communicating with people with a disability
People with a disability are mothers, fathers, friends, neighbours, employees, bosses, customers and community leaders. Just like you.
Promoting supportive and inclusive communities where people with a disability can participate equally in community life is an important priority for Disability Services Queensland and the state government.
One of the ways we can contribute to achieving this priority is by communicating effectively with and about people with a disability. This involves:
- ensuring people with a disability have equitable access to information about services, activities, events, and issues affecting their lives
- interacting with people with a disability in a way that shows we value their contributions and respect their rights
- using appropriate language when speaking and writing about people with a disability.
The following publications provide practical advice about how we can meet our responsibilities in each of these areas and play our part in building a more supportive Queensland community.
