Maxine Bartman (Rockhampton)

Here you can listen to the story of Maxine Bartman who is an Indigenous Queenslander with a disability.

Introduction:

Strong and Proud - promoting awareness of the experience of Indigenous people with a disability, thanks to the support of Disability Services Queensland.

Narrator:

Walk in to the Endeavour Business Service building in Rockhampton and you'll find a group of around 35 people with a disability hard at work making stakes and pegs for local industry and real estate agents, sorting rags or making high quality outdoor furniture. And among them you'll find the smiling face of Maxine Bartman, who takes pride in her work at Endeavour assembling some of the tables and chairs that are sold to clients around the state.

Maxine Bartman:

"I start work at 8 o'clock, we have smoko and lunch, finish at 4 o'clock in the afternoon then we go home. I do oiling, packing and other stuff, table chairs all that stuff. We use a strapping machine and strap boxes, because I got taught how to strap boxes, and I do some other stuff. The flags for the mines, I cut that up and I got a certificate for that."

Narrator:

Maxine has a number of interests outside of her work at Endeavour. She loves catching up with her family on weekends and has represented her state at basketball.

Maxine Bartman :

"Yeah, I used to play a lot of sport, used to play basketball for Queensland, and I don't anymore so I play ten-pin bowling every Monday night now. I used to play indoor cricket, used to play all that sport, too."
