2008 grant recipients

Statewide

Grants of up to $15,000 have been awarded to organisations whose activities target a number of communities or have a statewide focus.

Kith and Kin Association Limited

Kith and Kin Association will coordinate Artworks, a weekly art program of workshops for adults with a disability to coincide with Disability Action Week. The program will conclude with a statewide arts competition showcasing the talent of artists with a disability and an awards ceremony. All entries will be displayed at the Aitkenvale Library for community viewing.

Asperger’s Syndrome Support Network

Asperger’s Syndrome Support Network will web stream two information seminars held in Brisbane. The first seminar will be hosted in February and the second during Disability Action Week. Seminars will give statewide access to specialist professionals who will present information on living with Asperger's Syndrome and strategies for coping.

Access Arts Incorporated

Access Arts will stage Crossing Divides – State of the Arts, a year-long program of exhibitions and workshops. These exhibitions and workshops will provide programs to develop the skills of people with a disability in a variety of arts activities and interactive events. Celebration events will be held at Brisbane Powerhouse, Metro Gallery and participating communities throughout the state.

Queensland Disability Housing Coalition

Queensland Disability Housing Coalition will host workshops to promote the rights of people with a disability to live as part of the community and raise community awareness, understanding and knowledge of needs for people with a disability. Workshops will be presented in regions where there are housing shortages and issues for people with a disability.

University of Queensland, Centre of National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation

The University of Queensland Centre of National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation will host a series of information workshops throughout Queensland to encourage people with a disability to actively participate in their communities and access the Disability Lifestyles website as a resource.

Butterfly Kids Incorporated

As a part of Disability Action Week celebrations, Butterfly Kids will host a series of presentations at schools, childcare centres and kindergartens throughout Queensland. Children's author Leanne Walsh will present disability awareness sessions for children encouraging them to be more inclusive.

Brisbane

Queensland Radio for the Print Handicapped Limited (4RPH)

Radio 4RPH will present Access All Areas, a weekly radio program covering all aspects of disability. The program is coordinated and presented by people with a disability.

Salubrious Productions

During Disability Action Week, Salubrious Productions will arrange Live in Queen Street, a series of free public performances by a range of talented artists with a disability.

Redlands Bayside Disability Services

Art of Change Visual Arts Program and Exhibition is a series of 13 workshops for people with a disability and will involve painting, drawing, printmaking, stained glass making, pottery and ceramics and will culminate in a week long exhibition during Disability Action Week.

Redlands Bayside Disability Services will also host a Community Arts Fair, Music and Drama Performances, a program designed to build inclusive communities through encouraging participation of people with a disability in the performing arts.

Guide Dogs Queensland

Guide Dogs Queensland will host a one day mobility expo in Brisbane to showcase and promote the range of services and equipment available for vision impaired people. Visitors to the expos can also experience first-hand a walk with a guide dog.

Moreton

Community Access and Transition Services (CATS)

CATS will arrange two projects. During Disability Action Week, the ‘Crossing the Road’ initiative will provide presentations to local school students creating greater awareness of disability issues and a more inclusive community. A performance by primary and high school students alongside people with a disability will also be presented as a part of International Day of People with a Disability celebrations.

Anuha Services

Anuha Services will host Building Better Futures for People with a Disability, a three-day community expo showcasing local and community support services as well as recreational activities designed to promote independent living for people with a disability.

Boonah Shire Disability Support Group

During Disability Action Week, the Boonah Shire Disability Support Group will host Bridging Gaps, an outdoor community event developed and adapted for people with a disability to participate in recreational activities and games.

Ozcare

People with a disability will be invited to participate in the MOZART Artist Program and will contribute to the making of a short film to be premiered on International Day for People with a Disability.

Lockyer Valley Community Disability Association

During Disability Action Week, the Lockyer Valley Community Disability Association will host an art and craft competition for children and adults with a disability in the Lockyer Valley.

Gold Coast

Beenleigh Police Citizens and Youth Club

Beenleigh Police Citizens and Youth Club will launch Creative Movements in celebration of International Day of People with a Disability. Based on gymnastics and dance, this interactive six-week program will help to develop the skills and confidence of children with disability.

Centacare

During Disability Action Week, Centacare will host an evening event for local members of the community and disability sector representatives to promote awareness and understanding of the experiences of people with a disability, featuring guest speakers and networking opportunities.

Foundation for Independence, Recreation and Social Training (FIRST)

FIRST will play host to Festival Day for people with a disability which will include an art exhibition, dance performance and interactive workshops as part of the celebrations during Disability Action Week.

Sunshine Coast

SPIRAL Incorporated

During Disability Action Week, Celebration of Abilities Day will draw local residents together throughout the Sunshine Coast to participate in a range of activities such as displays, games, demonstrations, exhibits, rides and performances that promote inclusiveness for people with a disability.

Interact Australia (Recreations Unlimited Queensland)

Interact Australia will coordinate a series of soccer clinics that will gather young people with a disability in a social environment to increase their skills, ability and confidence. Sessions start in March 2008 and will conclude in a community sporting event on International Day of People with a Disability.

Cooloola Human Services Network

The Cooloola Community Art Exhibition and Access for All Task Force Project will showcase the talents of emerging artists, craftspeople and musicians with a disability.

Caboolture Family Network

The Caboolture Family Network will host a children’s festival for children with and without a disability. The festival will feature fun activities to promote inclusion for all in a nurturing environment and will include activities such as children’s entertainment, bowling, arts and crafts workshops, an animal farm and Indigenous art and dance demonstrations.

Darling Downs / South-West Queensland

Cerebral Palsy League Queensland

During Disability Action Week, Cerebral Palsy League Queensland will host regional business breakfast sessions for prospective employers and regional business showcasing the advantages of employing people with a disability.

Toowoomba Police Citizens and Youth Club

Toowoomba Police Citizens and Youth Club will coordinate a weekly program of sports ability development for people with a disability. The program will conclude with a community sporting demonstration during Disability Action Week.

Wide Bay Burnett

Bundaberg Neighbourhood Centre

Regional disability organisations have combined to provide workshops during Disability Action Week for all community members to participate in a range of recreational activities including dance, wheel chair dancing, drama, fitness and art. A sailing fun day will end the week.

Phoenix House Association Incorporated

Phoenix House will host the ‘We Can’ Forum and workshops to increase knowledge and understanding within the community and help prevent abuse and assault relating to people with a disability.

Graham House Community Care Centre

A two-week art show and exhibition will showcase the talent of local artists with a disability. The exhibition will open with a celebratory wine and cheese night and conclude with feature performances by people with a disability.

Fitzroy / Central West Queensland

Gladstone Community Linking Agency

The Gladstone Community Linking Agency will host Arts for Everyone. All members of the community are invited to experience a range of art and craft mediums. The interactive series of workshops will feature the artistic talents of people with a disability.

Blue Care

During Disability Action Week, Blue Care will coordinate a locally scripted play performed by local school children and produced by a local resident with a disability.

Mackay / Whitsunday Region

Life Stream Foundation on behalf of the Mackay Whitsunday Region

A series of information sessions, recreation activities and events will be coordinated in the Mackay Whitsunday region to raise awareness, generate discussion and recognise the contributions and achievements of people in the disability sector.

North Queensland Region

New Way Agencies

People with a disability will be invited to participate in a series of creative workshops and a variety concert. The workshops will provide people with a disability an opportunity to develop new skills and perform these skills in a variety concert during Disability Action Week.

Kith and Kin Association Limited

Kith and Kin Association will coordinate two projects. ‘Artworks Reflections’ is an activity held during Disability Action Week and is designed to allow creative expression for adults with a disability through art and photography.

‘Artworks in the Tropics’ will involve the development and exhibition of artwork by people with a disability on International Day of People with a Disability.

Far North Queensland

Thawuun Support Services

During Disability Action Week, people with a disability will be invited to participate in the Hopevale Disability and Support Awareness project which includes a range of activities such as artwork displays, dance performances, special events and sporting activities.

ARC Disability Services

ARC Disability Services will host Dance Zone, a 40-week program of dance and movement for people with a disability. This program is designed to increase confidence and enhance skills of people with a disability to perform at a wide range of community events.
