Site background

Sugarworld Gardens' site
Sugarworld Gardens were developed on the site of the former Hambledon Sugar Mill, established in 1883, and have grown to become the premier open space parklands of Cairns' southern suburbs.
Otherwise known as Edmonton's Botanic Reserve, Sugarworld Gardens features numerous trees planted during the early pioneering days of the sugar industry. Further plantings over the years have continued to increase the botanical diversity of the gardens.
Sugarworld is situated in the centre of one of the fastest-developing areas of Cairns and has high patronage from all surrounding suburbs. The addition of an all abilities play space for all children within the community will respond to the area's growing needs. More information about the gardens can be found on the Cairns City Council's website.
Planning and design
Various stakeholders were identified early during the initial planning stages of the project. At the same time, a series of different strategies were also developed to encourage community and stakeholder participation, including:
- three two-hour workshops held at various times on the same day
- written surveys
- a public open day held at the Sugarworld Gardens’ site
- student activity packs sent to a number of local schools
- public displays at local supermarkets
- information posted on council’s website
- open discussion and ongoing feedback.
