Site background

Anzac Park - the site for the Ayr All Abilities Playground.Playground site: Anzac Park

Anzac Park is a popular recreational space with strong ties to the Ayr community. Among the park's features is a section dedicated to war memorials commemorating those who served in World Wars I and II, as well as the Borneo, Korean and Vietnam wars.

The site has also been developed to represent local and regional landmarks, and to showcase the Burdekin region's culture. Examples include the Ravenswood Gold Works — a popular sand and water play area — and Burdekin Delta Transport — a truck and mini bike area which encourages children to role play.

Also located on the 1.6-hectare site is a skate park, which is popular among the district's young people.

Prior to this project, there were no purpose-built facilities for children with a disability in the area. The need to address this gap was evident in the community's support of council's Expression of Interest submission to create an all abilities playground in Ayr.

Planning and design

October 2008 saw the start of the Ayr All Abilities Playground project.

Key community stakeholders, including local school students, teachers, families and community organisations, participated in the planning of the project.

Community and school-based workshops were held, in addition to surveys, to capture local residents' ideas on what the new play space could offer, particularly regarding play experiences, access and other facilities.

Throughout 2009, these ideas were transferred into concept design plans, which were then developed further in collaboration with the community.

The design is currently under review.
