Let's talk about it
Too often a lack of knowledge about disability, or understanding of how people manage disability day-to-day, prevents Queenslanders from interacting together in supportive communities.
People with a disability are individuals with the same interests, aspirations, skills and faults as anyone else. In fact, when you have a conversation with a person with a disability, you will probably find you have plenty of stories and experiences to share.
‘Let's talk about it', the 2009 Disability Action Week campaign, invites all Queenslanders to start talking about disability within their community and how we can all play a role in promoting greater understanding and awareness of disability.
The theme also challenges to put aside any feelings of awkwardness we might have in getting know individual people with a disability who meet in our everyday lives.
Respecting individual needs and appreciating personal experiences will help us all see beyond the disability and help create a stronger, more supportive and welcoming community.
Jack, Rachael and Barry, the three people featured on this year's Disability Action Week posters, are saying to their fellow Queenslanders ‘Let's talk about it'. Let's not let ignorance or fear be a barrier to conversation.
Tips for communicating better with people with a disability in your community
1. Treat people with a disability with the same respect and consideration you have for everyone else.
2. Don't assume what a person can or can't do.
3. Speak to people with a disability directly, not through their carer, assistant or interpreter.
4. Ask before you help - don't just jump in.
5. Can't understand what's being said? Don't pretend - ask again.
6. Take some time - people with some kinds of disability may take a little longer to understand and respond.
7. Some disabilities are invisible. Get to know people.
8. Guide dogs are working dogs. Never pat or speak to a guide dog while it's wearing a harness.
