Goal 1: An accessible built environment

Everyone can easily and safely enter, move through and use the facilities on DSQ premises.

Strategy 1

To develop and implement a program to progressively upgrade all premises used by DSQ to meet Smart Housing Universal Design standards promoted by the Department of Housing.

Actions

1.1 Develop an accessible premises policy to include reference to existing department controlled premises and criteria for proposed new premises.

1.2 Develop access protocols and assessment criteria (based on the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's Advisory Notes on Access to Premises and Relevant Standards) in preparation for an accessibility audit of DSQ controlled premises (Action 1.3).

1.3 Develop an accessibility audit program for all DSQ controlled premises.

1.4 Develop a staged works program to progressively upgrade nominated premises to meet standards, including timeframes and resource requirements and to implement these progressively.

1.5 Use our membership of cross-government and National Disability Administrator forums to influence improvements in minimum accessibility requirements as articulated within existing codes and standards.
