How we work
We deliver a wide range of disability services for people with a disability, frail older people and those with a mental illness, their families and carers. These specialist disability services are delivered by our department and non-government service providers that we fund.
We recognise the importance of engaging clients and stakeholders in policy and legislative developments and use a number of engagement processes such as our Shared Visions conferencing program.
- We fund services
We provide funding to more than 290 non-government organisations that support approximately 20,900 people.
A total of 77 non-government organisations received funding to support people with a mental illness and psychiatric disability to reside in the community in 2007–08.
- We provide services
We help people with a disability, their families and carers to access the support and services they need as they move through different stages of their life.
- We safeguard the quality of disability services in Queensland
We work to safeguard and improve the quality of disability services through the Disability Sector Quality System and the Complaints Managements System. We have a formal process for investigating any complaints.
- We partner with others to encourage inclusion
We work to help create Queensland communities that are supportive by working in partnership with all levels of government, community service providers and the community in general.
- We develop policies
Government policy is an important part of building supportive communities. We work with other state government departments, such as Queensland Health, Department of Housing and Queensland Transport to make sure the needs of Queenslanders with a disability are considered.
