Disability Service Plan 2007-2010

On 1 July 2006 the Disability Services Act 2006 (the Act) came into effect. The Act provides a strong foundation for promoting the rights of people with a disability while increasing their wellbeing and encouraging their participation in community life. It includes measures to safeguard the rights and safety of people with a disability and combines with existing systems to improve the quality of services they receive.

The new legislation encourages all Queenslanders to promote inclusive principles within their own communities and requires every government agency to prepare a Disability Service Plan by the 1 July 2007.

Disability Services Queensland values and respects Queensland's diversity and acknowledges the contributions people with a disability have made to the economic, social and cultural life of the community. Our vision is for a society that values people with a disability, upholds their rights and supports their equitable participation in everyday life.

The Disability Service Plan 2007-2010 represents the department's commitment to improve the responsiveness and quality of its services in addressing the needs of people with a disability, their families and carers.

Under the Disability Service Plan, Disability Services Queensland is committed to:

Through the evaluation and continual improvement of the Disability Service Plan, the department will continue to ensure that people with a disability, their families and carers are provided with opportunities to engage with the department and are empowered to exercise their rights.
