Final Report 2008–09
Disability Services Queensland enters a new era in 2009 when, together with the former departments of Child Safety, Housing, Sport and Recreation, the Office for Women and the Indigenous Government Coordination Office, we form the new Department of Communities.
That is why this annual report will be the final report for Disability Services Queensland.
In 2008-09, Disability Services Queensland has made a number of significant achievements. We have:
- supported more than 1132 additional families through our post-school, family support and family and early childhood services;
- introduced legislation to better support and protect carers and people using guide and assistance dogs;
- increased the Home and Community Care budget by $37.8 million to $386.3 million;
- introduced four new programs to enable community organisations to provide non-clinical support to people with a mental illness; and
- delivered on our agreed objectives and achieved an operating surplus of $1.51 million.
While we have accomplished many things in the past year, the amalgamation of these departments and functions offers more valuable opportunities for improving, streamlining and integrating service delivery.
It will also deliver savings and efficiencies through better coordination of policy and services, streamlining corporate services and redistribution of staff to frontline services.
We will report on our future success in meeting the needs of our clients as part of future Department of Communities’ annual reports.
